How to Clean the Dishwasher

Click here to view more cleaning tips for your dishwasher including how to clean the filter, spray arm exterior and interior of the dishwasher.

We recommend using FINISH® Dishwasher Cleaner. The cleaning frequency depends on how often you use your dishwasher and the water hardness of the area you live in. If you see white or grey residue on the inside of your dishwasher, it’s time to clean it.

FINISH® Dishwasher Cleaner works by safely and effectively breaking down and removing mineral build-up from the interior of your machine, including hard-to-reach parts like the spray arms. Cleaning your dishwasher on a regular basis may extend the life of your dishwasher and improve its performance.

Here's how to use FINISH® Dishwasher Cleaner:

1. Remove the sticker from the top of the bottle without removing the cap.
2. Make sure your dishwasher is empty.
3. Place the bottle upside down on the lower rack in a secure place, such as where you would place a small dish.
4. Run the dishwasher on the hottest and longest cycle. You can purchase FINISH® Dishwasher Cleaner at your local supermarket.

How Often and How Do I Descale My Dishwasher?

Descale the dishwasher if there are limescale deposits. We recommend descaling your dishwasher at least once a year.

Here's how to descale your dishwasher:

1. Run the hottest, regular cycle without detergent or dishes.
2. After 30 minutes, open the dishwasher with caution and add the descaler to the bottom of the dishwasher. Close the dishwasher and restart the cycle.
3. After the cycle has finished, run another wash cycle for a thorough cleaning.

How to Use Softener Salt

Not all dishwasher models use softener salt. Please refer to your owner’s manual to see if this applies to your dishwasher. If you do not have an owner's manual, you can download it here.

Add softener salt regularly by following the instructions in your owner's manual. The salt will help soften the water used in the dishwasher and reduce hard water deposits.

Watch the video to learn how to load salt in your dishwasher.

Softener salt and a pitcher for pouring softener salt can be purchased in the Thermador Accessories Store.

How to Clean Stains in the Dishwasher

Stains on the interior of the dishwasher are generally due to (1) water hardness (white mineral build-up) or (2) silverware in contact with the tub (discolored stains).

  • 1. For water hardness stains (white mineral build-up), use a dishwasher cleaner to remove these stains. It will break down and remove mineral build-up.
  • 2. To prevent stains on the tub, ensure the silverware does not come in contact with the tub during the wash cycle. Use a dishwasher cleaner to remove stains.

We recommend using FINISH® Dishwasher Cleaner to clean your dishwasher. Purchase the cleaner at your local supermarket.

Never use a steam cleaner to clean your dishwasher.
